Mobile Arctic Research Unit
Based on commonly-found items and materials, most of them salvaged, the unit is based on the classic Volkswagen Transporter van, adapted to its Arctic environment through sustainable technologies and rigged sail and mast technology consisting of three layers: The van itself forms the base-layer, with high thermal capacity provided by polar fleece, in which inhabitants sleep. The mid-layer consists of a breathable membrane made of wool felt, where the inhabitants work. The outer-layer is made of rip-stop nylon, providing a waterproof layer and serving as storage.
Deployment Mechanism:
A telescopic arm extends trough the center of the van. Upon reaching its peak, arms are extended over and beyond the vehicle, like an umbrella. The edges are then pegged down manually. Once the vehicle has deployed its outer waterproof layer, the mid-layer can then be unfolded. Here, a panel on the side of the van comes down and a domed metal lattice structure is extended, over which is attached the breathable wool felt membrane.
