Michaelis Boyd Associates (MBA) was formed in 1995 by Alex Michaelis and Tim Boyd and has established itself as a practice producing simple, elegant architecture, with an environmental emphasis. Alex and Tim first met whilst working in the same practice and prior to doing so, had worked for large practices: Richard Rogers & Partners, Colquhoun, Miller & Partners and Wickham & Associates.
Michaelis Boyd has a modern approach, aiming to simplify the client brief and scheme designs. The practice works on a variety of projects: residential refurbishment and new build, restaurants, bars, hotels and offices, primarily in London, sometimes in the countryside and occasionally abroad.
Recent commissions have included Soho House Berlin, a boutique hotel and member’s club, the new build and restoration of a Grade 1 listed property, incorporating a new build vineyard, chateau and moat, a private house for the Conservative Party Leader and One Alfred Place, a new business club in central London. The practice also undertakes pro-bono projects, ranging from a home for Gurkha ex-servicemen in Pokhara, Nepal to activity centers for underprivileged children in West London.
Alex and Tim, along with Directors, Simon and Luke, work with clients on clearly defining the brief. Based on that, a scheme is created, emphasising space, flow and light. MBA then encourages the client to further define the project, with the last layer of finish ranging from minimalist to traditional.
MBA is a design-led practice and the level of detail is very high, as is the finish it expects of its contractors and the availability of its teams throughout the process. Most of MBA’s commissions come through word of mouth, due to the quality of design and finishes and its delivery of projects on budget and on time.
